However, renting a car abroad can raise questions. At One Road, transparency is our priority. That’s why we’ve prepared this definitive guide to ensure your experience is smooth, safe, and professional.
1. Legal Requirements for Driving in the Dominican Republic
Driver’s License: Your driver’s license from your home country is valid for driving here for the duration of your tourist visa (generally up to 30 or 90 days). You don’t need an International Driving Permit if yours is valid.
Minimum Age: The minimum age is 21. For high-end or luxury vehicles (such as our Lexus or BMW models), the minimum age is usually 25.
Passport: You must present your original passport at the time of signing.
2. Additional Coverage: From Basic to Full Protection
For your peace of mind, we offer different levels of protection for your rental vehicle. These are selected and charged separately from the mandatory insurance, allowing you to adjust the level of risk you wish to assume.
Basic Protection (CDW): Covers collision damage with a deductible (the maximum amount the customer pays in the event of an incident).
Intermediate Protection: Reduces the deductible and usually includes additional benefits such as extended roadside assistance.
Full Protection (Comprehensive Insurance): This is our most recommended option. It gives you maximum peace of mind by eliminating or minimizing the deductible. With this option, you can enjoy your vacation without financial worries in the event of any unforeseen circumstances.
Note for travelers: If your premium credit card offers rental insurance, remember that this generally only covers vehicle damage (CDW) and never replaces the legally required local insurance, which is mandatory under Dominican law.
3. Choose the right vehicle for the terrain.
Not all destinations on the island require the same type of vehicle:
For the Bávaro and Cap Cana hotel zone: A modern sedan or compact SUV is ideal.
For excursions to Samaná or mountainous areas: We highly recommend a 4×4 SUV or Jeep. Its ground clearance and traction will provide you with safety on secondary roads or in tropical rainy conditions.
4. Tips for driving in the area:
Use Waze: It’s the most up-to-date app for real-time traffic and detour information in the Punta Cana and Santo Domingo area.
Fuel: Return the vehicle with the same fuel level as when you picked it up. At One Road, we always check with you to avoid extra charges.
Watch out for speed bumps: That’s what we call speed reducers. Be alert when entering towns or residential areas, as some are not painted.
